Tableau in the Classroom

I

 Unit: Drama

Theme: Tableau

Introduction

A tableau vivant, French for "living picture", is a static scene containing one or more actors or models. They are stationary and silent, usually in costume, carefully posed, with props and/or scenery, and may be theatrically lit. It thus combines aspects of theatre and the visual arts.

Jack and the Bean stalk

Tableau can be used for a lot of things other than theater. I have used it for example in a Bus 150 presentation to link excel spreadsheets. Tableau can be useful for young students because it is an effective way of presenting and linking pictures to text in an easy to understand and comprehend manner. Tableau is a living picture that can be used to tell a story.

Scene 1: The seed is planted. Use a picture of the seed being planted and read along to the slide

Scene 2: The growth of the beanstalk. The second scene should depict the rapid growth and change of the beanstalk overnight

Scene 3: Jack climbing the bean stalk. The third scene could be jack climbing the bean stalk to help build engagement of the audience and suspense

Scene 4: The giant is waiting at the top for jack.

Scene 5: Jack explores the village with the giant and enters the magical garden

Scene 6: A witch appears and takes the giant hostage because the witch wants one of the magic plants

Scene 7: Jack exchanges the plant with the witch for the return of the giant.

Scene 8: Jack and the giant return home.

Scene 9: Jack and the giant celebrate the defeat of the witch.

Scene 10: Each return home, and plant the magic plant for the village. The ending of the story.

Tableaux can be effective in telling a fairy tale by visually representing key scenes and characters, making the story more engaging and understandable for young students; they are useful for young students as they promote creativity, collaboration, and understanding of narrative elements; tableaux can be employed to teach subjects other than theater by using them as a visual aid to illustrate concepts, historical events, or scientific processes, enhancing comprehension and retention.

Tableaux can be used to teach things other than theater because it is a dynamic tool for enhancing understanding of many subjects. You can analyze through graphs and other such things to be a symbol of understanding. It can be used for young student due to the visual elements and the active learning techniques.

Stage modeling allows students to express themselves and show their own style, thereby enhancing their self-expression skills. And stage performances usually require teamwork, which also encourages students to experience the spirit of teamwork, and can also stimulate students' imagination, thereby cultivating independent thinking.
